Do scented candles cause asthma flare-ups?
Yes. VOCs from scented candles trigger airway inflammation and lung injury, especially in people with asthma.
What's actually in it
Scented candles put a cocktail of VOCs into room air: formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, and terpenes. Asthma airways are already primed to react to irritation. Anything that inflames the airway lining makes coughing, wheezing, and tight chest worse.
Candles also release fine particles from soot. Particles get deep into the lungs and make any asthma trigger land harder.
What the research says
A 2025 study in Front Public Health exposed rats to candle VOCs at realistic indoor concentrations. The animals developed airway inflammation and lung tissue damage, plus higher markers of oxidative stress. Those are the same processes behind an asthma flare.
People with asthma should skip scented candles completely, especially in bedrooms. If you want ambience, flameless LED candles or a single unscented beeswax taper in a well-ventilated room are better.
