Does PLA bioplastic age heart cells faster in teens?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studykitchen
Verdict: Avoid

Yes in animal studies. PLA microplastic in adolescent rats drove heart fibrosis through cardiomyocyte senescence.

What's actually in it

Polylactic acid (PLA) is the compostable plastic in clear "eco" cups, takeout lids, and some kid plates. It's made from corn or sugarcane. Marketing calls it earth-friendly. The body still treats it as plastic. PLA also breaks down faster in hot drinks and acidic foods than in cold storage, so the dose your kid swallows can be bigger than expected.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Toxicology fed adolescent rats PLA microplastics at everyday doses. The hearts showed fibrosis driven by aging cardiomyocytes (cardiomyocyte senescence). The damage was similar to what other studies have found with polystyrene and polyethylene. PLA isn't a free pass for the teen heart.

Stainless steel and silicone (no plastic mix-ins) are still the safest. If you do use compostable cups for parties, pour cold water or juice, not hot coffee or acidic punch. For kid lunches and snacks, a stack of small ceramic plates or stainless steel containers from LunchBots or PlanetBox does the same job.
