Does store-bought rice contain pesticide residues that are harmful over time?
Often, yes. A global review found multiple pesticide residues in rice from many countries, with some posing long-term dietary health risks.
What's actually in it
Rice is one of the most heavily treated crops in the world. Farmers use insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides throughout the growing season to protect yields. Residues from these chemicals can remain in the harvested grain, even after milling, washing, and cooking.
Common pesticides found in rice include organophosphates, pyrethroids, neonicotinoids, and triazole fungicides. Each targets a different pest, but many also affect human health. You won't taste or smell them, and regular washing reduces but doesn't eliminate residues.
What the research says
A 2026 review in Environ Int analyzed pesticide contamination in rice from across the globe. The study profiled which pesticides show up most often, assessed the dietary health risks for consumers, and ranked the chemicals by how dangerous their biological mechanisms are.
The researchers found multiple pesticide residues in rice from many countries. While most individual samples fell below regulatory limits, the concern is cumulative exposure. Most people eat rice every day, sometimes at every meal. That means you're getting small doses of multiple pesticides with every serving.
Some of the detected pesticides are endocrine disruptors, while others are neurotoxic or carcinogenic at higher doses. The study used mechanism-informed prioritization to flag the most dangerous ones, noting that current regulatory limits may not account for the combined effects of multiple residues together.
To reduce exposure, rinse rice thoroughly before cooking (3 to 4 washes). Choose organic rice when possible. Eating a variety of grains, like quinoa, millet, or barley, also helps by diversifying your exposure instead of relying on one crop.
