Is it safe to let a baby nap in a car seat for hours?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Avoid

Not ideal. Besides positional risks, long naps in a warm car seat increase flame retardant transfer.

What's actually in it

Car seat foam and fabric typically contain organophosphate flame retardants to meet federal motor vehicle standards. A sleeping baby in a warm car seat generates sweat that speeds chemical transfer to skin.

There's also a positional safety concern: long naps in a car seat outside the car can cause breathing problems. Pediatric guidance is to move a baby to a flat surface for naps over 30 minutes when possible.

What the research says

A 2025 study in Sci Total Environ showed sweat amplifies flame retardant transfer from kids' textiles.

Use a flame-retardant-free car seat (UPPAbaby, Nuna, Clek offer specific models). Move baby to a flat sleep surface for long naps.
