Is it safe for kids to carry backpacks made from PVC?
No. PVC backpacks off-gas phthalates, and kids wear them pressed against their bodies all day.
What's actually in it
Shiny vinyl kid's backpacks, pencil cases, and lunch bags are PVC softened with phthalates. Body heat and sweat pull phthalates onto skin. Kids also put hands in the bag and then in their mouths.
What the research says
A 2025 study in Nat Commun linked prenatal and early phthalate exposure to slower infant neurodevelopment. A 2025 study showed sweat amplifies chemical transfer from kids' textiles.
Choose backpacks made from canvas, cotton, recycled polyester (labeled PVC-free and phthalate-free), or TPU. Avoid PVC (usually labeled "#3" or "vinyl").
