Is it safe for kids to use the playground after rain?
Based on 1 peer-reviewed studyhome
Verdict: Use Caution
Mostly yes, but rubber mulch playgrounds leach more chemicals when wet.
What's actually in it
Many playgrounds use shredded tire mulch as a soft surface. Tires contain zinc, sulfur, and PAHs. Rain extracts some of these into puddles and wet mulch that kids touch and occasionally eat.
What the research says
A 2025 case-control study linked PFAS and related chemical exposures to higher childhood leukemia risk. Tire rubber is a known PAH and heavy metal source.
Choose playgrounds with wood chips, sand, or engineered wood fiber surfaces. Wash kids' hands after play.
