Is it safe for toddlers to drink juice from juice boxes?
Not really. Juice box liners are plastic and foil. Acidic juice pulls plasticizers through the lining.
What's actually in it
Juice boxes are polyethylene-lined cartons with a thin aluminum layer and a plastic straw. Juice is acidic, which speeds migration of plasticizers and microplastic particles. Warm storage (car, backpack) makes it worse.
Beyond chemicals, juice in any package gives toddlers a big dose of concentrated sugar.
What the research says
A 2025 study in J Hazard Mater measured phthalate exposure across common foods and found packaging added measurably to intake. A 2025 study showed plastic particle release scales with temperature.
For toddlers, water, milk, or whole fruit beats juice. If you serve juice, pour a small amount from a glass bottle into a cup.
