Is it safe to breathe in a newly painted room for a baby?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studiesbaby
Verdict: Avoid

No. Paint off-gasses VOCs for weeks. Babies should be out during and after painting.

What's actually in it

Conventional paints release VOCs, formaldehyde, and solvents for weeks after application. Low-VOC and zero-VOC paints cut this but don't eliminate it. Babies breathe more air per pound and have developing lungs.

What the research says

A 2025 study in Front Public Health showed indoor VOCs cause airway inflammation and lung injury in rats. A 2025 screening study mapped paint chemistry.

Paint the nursery 6 to 8 weeks before arrival. Use zero-VOC paint (Benjamin Moore Natura, Sherwin-Williams Harmony). Ventilate heavily for two weeks.
