Is it safe to buy furniture made from pressed wood for a nursery?
Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Avoid
Not ideal. Particle board and MDF release formaldehyde for years.
What's actually in it
Particle board, MDF, and laminate furniture are wood dust bonded with urea-formaldehyde glue. The glue releases formaldehyde for years. New cribs, changing tables, and dressers made from these materials are heavy formaldehyde sources.
What the research says
A 2025 review in Rev Environ Health detailed formaldehyde health effects: respiratory irritation, cancer risk, and contact dermatitis.
Choose solid wood furniture or pressed wood certified to CARB Phase 2 or TSCA Title VI (low formaldehyde). Air out new pieces for weeks before bringing a baby near them.
