Is it safe to buy secondhand wool coats instead of new ones?
Usually yes. Secondhand garments have been washed and aired, so they've lost most of the original chemical finishes.
What's actually in it
New clothing comes with residual formaldehyde resins, dye residues, and finishing chemicals. Most wash out or off-gas over the first many cleanings. A secondhand coat has already been through that process. It's typically cleaner to wear than a new one.
What the research says
A 2025 review in Rev Environ Health documents chemical finishes in new uniforms and kids' clothing.
Shop thrift or consignment for outerwear. Air out or wash before wearing. Look for natural fibers (wool, cotton, linen) that last decades with care.
