Is it safe to drink alcohol from a lead crystal decanter?
No for storage, occasional pouring yes. Alcohol pulls lead out of crystal over weeks.
What's actually in it
Lead crystal contains lead oxide to give it weight and clarity. Short contact (pouring wine through for a few hours) leaches a little lead. Storing alcohol in a lead decanter for days or weeks extracts much more.
Lead has no safe level, especially for pregnant women and kids.
What the research says
A 2025 study in J Hazard Mater documented lead migration kinetics from lead-containing glass and ceramic surfaces into acidic solutions. Rates climbed with contact time.
Use crystal decanters for display only or for pouring at the table (short contact). Store spirits and wine in plain glass.
