Is it safe to eat deli meat wrapped in plastic?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studykitchen
Verdict: Use Caution

Not ideal. Fatty deli meat in plastic pulls out phthalates and adds microplastics to each slice.

What's actually in it

Pre-sliced deli meat is sealed in plastic pouches or shrink-wrapped trays. Animal fat is the ideal solvent for phthalates, which migrate steadily from the plastic film into the meat. A week of fridge storage before you finish the package means a week of leaching.

Sliced turkey, ham, and cold cuts typically test near the top of packaged-food phthalate lists.

What the research says

A 2025 study in J Hazard Mater mapped phthalate intake from real diets and found fatty packaged foods like deli meat were a top source.

Buy deli meat sliced fresh at the counter and wrapped in paper. Eat within a few days. Or cook whole cuts of meat at home and slice what you need.
