Is it safe to pour boiling water directly into a plastic baby bottle?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Avoid

No. Boiling water pulls millions of nanoplastic particles out of polypropylene baby bottles in minutes.

What's actually in it

Most baby bottles sold in the U.S. are polypropylene, marked with a "5." Parents are told to sterilize bottles with boiling water and to mix powdered formula with hot water to kill bacteria. Both steps put the hottest possible water against the softest part of the bottle for the longest amount of time.

The result is predictable: nanoplastic particles by the millions, plus additive residues, all poured straight into what the baby drinks next.

What the research says

A 2025 study in J Agric Food Chem measured nanoplastic release from polypropylene containers across temperatures. Boiling water pulled out the most, by far. Even a brief rinse with boiling water left behind millions of particles in the next feed.

The World Health Organization's advice to mix formula at 70°C is about killing bacteria. It can still be followed safely with a small change: boil water in a glass kettle or pot, let it cool a minute to drop below 70°C, and only then pour it into the plastic bottle. Better yet, use a glass baby bottle and skip the plastic entirely for the feed itself.
