Is it safe to preheat an empty nonstick pan on high heat?
No. An empty nonstick pan on high heat releases the most PFAS fumes. Enough to kill pet birds.
What's actually in it
PTFE coatings start breaking down above roughly 260°C. A hot empty pan gets there fast. The breakdown releases PFAS fumes, PTFE particles, and other fluorinated compounds. Pet birds have been killed by fumes from overheated nonstick pans.
Humans don't drop like birds, but the fumes still damage airways and liver with repeated exposure.
What the research says
A 2025 study in J Hazard Mater documented PTFE damage to gut cells. A 2025 study linked PTFE exposure to lower sperm quality.
Don't preheat nonstick empty. Better: replace nonstick with cast iron, stainless, or ceramic-coated cookware.
