Is it safe to put baby powder on a diaper rash?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Avoid

No. Inhaled talc and cornstarch powders cause lung problems, and talc has been linked to cancer.

What's actually in it

Traditional baby powder is talc, which has been linked to ovarian cancer and asbestos contamination. Cornstarch powder is safer but still hazardous to inhale; a puff can end up in baby's lungs. The AAP advises against routine powder use.

What the research says

Major pediatric guidance, supported by respiratory safety data, has moved away from powder for decades. A 2025 study on fragrance and fine particles in household products shows that inhalation is a big exposure route.

For diaper area care, use plain zinc oxide cream. Keep the area dry with frequent changes and air time out of the diaper.
