Is it safe to refinish an old crib with new paint?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Use Caution

Only if the old paint is lead-free. Test before sanding.

What's actually in it

Cribs and furniture made before 1978 may have lead paint. Sanding releases lead dust that contaminates the home.

What the research says

A 2025 study in J Expo Sci Environ Epidemiol reinforced that even small lead doses raise children's blood lead.

Test the existing paint with an EPA-approved test kit before any refinishing. If positive, hire a lead-certified contractor or skip refinishing. Use zero-VOC, lead-free paint and water-based polyurethane or natural oil finish for the new coat.
