Is it safe to reheat food in plastic takeout containers in the oven?
No. Most plastic takeout containers melt or deform in the oven and release more chemicals even before they visibly fail.
What's actually in it
Plastic takeout containers are rated for microwave safe at low power, not oven temperatures. Polypropylene softens near 130°C, polystyrene much lower. A 175°C oven is far above both. Even "oven safe" plastic-coated trays are usually cardboard lined with a plastic film that shouldn't see prolonged oven use.
Chemical release scales with temperature.
What the research says
A 2025 study in J Agric Food Chem measured nanoplastic release from polypropylene in hot water; the amount climbed steeply with temperature. Oven-level heat pushes migration well beyond what was tested.
Transfer leftovers to a glass or ceramic baking dish before reheating in the oven. For quick reheats, a cast iron or stainless steel pan on the stove is fast and plastic-free.
