Is it safe to sleep in polyester bedsheets during hot weather?
Based on 1 peer-reviewed studyhome
Verdict: Avoid
No. Sweat pulls more chemicals out of polyester sheets, especially stain-resistant treated ones.
What's actually in it
Polyester sheets trap body heat and wick poorly. Summer sweat soaks into the fibers and speeds migration of residual chemicals (formaldehyde finishes, PFAS stain treatments, antimony) onto skin.
What the research says
A 2025 study in Sci Total Environ showed sweat amplified transfer of PFAS and flame retardants through skin by multiples over plain water.
Swap to organic cotton, linen, or bamboo lyocell sheets for hot weather. All breathe better and don't shed plastic fibers.
