Is it safe to swim in a chlorinated pool every day?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studyhome
Verdict: Use Caution

Mostly yes, but chlorine byproducts in the air and water add up for heavy swimmers.

What's actually in it

Pool chlorine reacts with sweat, urine, and skin oils to form disinfection byproducts like chloramines and trihalomethanes. Some absorb through skin; some concentrate in the air just above the water.

What the research says

A 2025 study in Food Chem showed chlorine byproducts plus microplastics cause more cell toxicity than either alone. An indoor pool with plastic floats and chloramines is worse than a well-ventilated outdoor pool.

Shower before and after swimming, choose outdoor pools when possible, and swim at pools that use saltwater or UV systems for lower chloramine load.
