Is it safe to do laundry with a dryer sheet if you have eczema?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studiesclothes
Verdict: Avoid

No. The quats, softeners, and fragrance from dryer sheets stay on fabric and irritate eczema-prone skin.

What's actually in it

Dryer sheets transfer quaternary ammonium compounds (quats), fatty softeners, and fragrance to every piece of fabric in the dryer. The coating doesn't wash out fully: it keeps rubbing off on skin throughout the life of the garment.

Quats are a well-documented skin and airway irritant, and fragrance blends commonly contain known contact allergens.

What the research says

A 2025 screening study in Environ Sci Technol identified dryer sheets as a heavy source of quats, fragrance chemicals, and preservatives. A 2025 study in Ann Work Expo Health linked quat exposure to respiratory and skin problems.

For eczema-prone skin, skip dryer sheets. Wool dryer balls reduce static without coating clothes. For softness, white vinegar in the rinse cycle works without fragrance.
