Is it safe to use an electric kettle with a plastic lid?
Not ideal. Steam condenses on the lid and drips plastic additives back into the water.
What's actually in it
Even "stainless steel" kettles often have a plastic lid and water-level window. Steam condenses on these parts and drips back into the water, carrying microplastics and additives. The spout also often has plastic components.
What the research says
A 2025 study in J Agric Food Chem measured particle release from polypropylene in hot water. A 2025 study showed plastic particles amplify toxicity of water disinfection byproducts.
Look for an all-metal or metal-and-glass kettle with no plastic in the steam path. A simple stovetop stainless steel kettle is always plastic-free.
