Is it safe to use rubber spatulas at high cooking temperatures?
Probably low risk at normal temperatures. For high-heat cooking, borosilicate glass and stainless steel are cleaner choices.
What's actually in it
Silicone is often marketed as inert, but research shows it can release cyclic siloxanes (D4, D5, D6) at high temperatures. These siloxane compounds are endocrine disruptors.
Low-grade silicone products may contain more fillers and release more chemicals. Look for food-grade, platinum-cured silicone for the lowest leaching.
What the research says
A 2026 study in j agric food chem looked at chemical exposure from everyday products and found: Release of Nanoplastics from Polypropylene Food Containers into Hot and Cold Shi K(1)(2), Okoffo ED(2)(3), Lu WC(2), Jiang J(4), Rauert C(2)(3)(5), Thomas.
