Is it safe to use a slow cooker with a ceramic insert?
Mostly yes if the ceramic is lead-free. Older slow cookers can have lead-glazed inserts.
What's actually in it
Most modern slow cooker inserts are lead-free ceramic. Older inserts (pre-2010) or budget imports may have lead-based glazes. Long, hot, acidic cooking (tomato sauce, chili, stew with wine) pulls the most out.
Check the manufacturer's site for a "lead-free" or "Prop 65" statement.
What the research says
A 2025 study in J Hazard Mater tracked lead and cadmium migration from ceramic surfaces in hot, acidic conditions. A 2025 study documented lead leaching from uncertain-origin cookware.
Use a modern, lead-free labeled slow cooker. Or upgrade to an Instant Pot with stainless steel insert for slow cook mode.
