Is it safe to use standard mosquito repellent plants indoors?
Based on 1 peer-reviewed studyhome
Verdict: Safer
Mostly yes if you skip the crushed-leaf sprays. Whole plants in pots are fine.
What's actually in it
Live mosquito-repellent plants (citronella, lemon balm, basil, lavender) release small amounts of terpenes naturally. In pots, they're fine. Crushed-leaf sprays or citronella candles release far more terpenes.
What the research says
A 2025 study in J Occup Environ Hyg showed essential oil diffusers reach workplace-level VOCs.
Keep potted herbs around for mild repellent and nice smells. For active mosquito problems, use picaridin or DEET on skin and fans to blow mosquitoes away.
