Is it safe to use UV filter sunscreens on pregnant bellies every summer?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Avoid

No. Prenatal UV filter exposure correlates with cognitive development issues.

What's actually in it

Chemical UV filters in sunscreen include oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, avobenzone, homosalate. These absorb UV rays by chemistry, then release the energy. They also absorb through skin into blood within hours. For a pregnant woman applying sunscreen generously over a baby bump, the exposure reaches the fetus through placental transfer.

Pregnancy often means more sun protection because pregnancy skin changes and melasma risk. More sunscreen means more chemical exposure.

What the research says

A 2026 longitudinal study in Environ Pollut examined prenatal exposure to ultraviolet filters and children's cognitive and neurobehavioral development. Higher maternal UV filter biomarkers correlated with lower cognitive scores and more behavioral issues in the children. The effect was specific to chemical UV filters, not mineral ones.

During pregnancy, switch to mineral-only sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the single active ingredient (non-nano preferred). Brands: Badger, Thinksport, Babyganics Mineral, Attitude Mineral. Physical barriers (wide-brim hat, UPF clothing, beach umbrella) reduce how much sunscreen is needed at all. For face-specific coverage, tinted mineral sunscreens exist and work fine for daily use.
