Is liquid fabric softener safe for sensitive skin?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studiesclothes
Verdict: Avoid

Not really. Fabric softeners coat fabric in quats and fragrance that irritate skin and airways.

What's actually in it

Liquid fabric softeners work by depositing a quaternary ammonium cation on fabric fibers. Quats are antimicrobial and antistatic, but they're also skin and airway irritants. Add synthetic fragrance and you get a product that coats clothes with chemicals designed to stay on through the dry cycle.

For people with eczema, asthma, or contact dermatitis, fabric softener is one of the most common hidden triggers.

What the research says

A 2025 study in Ann Work Expo Health measured quats and VOCs during home cleaning and laundry. Exposure correlated with respiratory symptoms and asthma onset. A 2025 screening study mapped fabric softeners as a major source of quats and fragrance in the home.

For soft clothes without the chemical coating: white vinegar in the rinse cycle, wool dryer balls, or just skipping softener altogether. Natural fibers like cotton and linen get softer with every wash on their own.
