Is long-wear lipstick and foundation the worst PFAS source in makeup?
Yes. Long-wear, water-resistant, and "transfer-proof" formulas are where PFAS hide most.
What's actually in it
PFAS are nicknamed "forever chemicals." Makeup brands use them to make foundation glide, lipstick stay 12 hours, and mascara survive a workout. They show up under names like polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), perfluorooctyl triethoxysilane, and any ingredient with "fluoro" in it. They cross skin and stay in the body for years.
What the research says
A 2026 study in Environ Pollut screened cosmetics with both targeted and non-targeted analysis. The team found known and unknown PFAS in many products. Foundation, eye makeup, and long-wear lipstick were the worst. Short-wear and tinted moisturizers were the cleanest.
Skip "long-wear," "transfer-proof," and "waterproof" labels for daily use. Read ingredient lists for "fluoro," "perfluoro," or "PTFE." Brands like Ilia, RMS Beauty, Saie, Kosas, and 100% Pure publish full ingredient disclosures. The EWG Skin Deep database flags PFAS-containing products.
