Is mineral sunscreen safer than chemical sunscreen for babies?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Safer

Yes. Mineral (zinc or titanium) sunscreens sit on skin instead of absorbing. Chemical UV filters show up in baby blood within hours.

What's actually in it

Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to physically block UV light. They sit on skin's surface. Chemical sunscreens use oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate, or homosalate, which absorb UV light. These absorb through skin and show up in blood at levels high enough to raise regulatory concern.

The FDA has asked chemical sunscreen makers to provide more safety data. Mineral filters are the only ones the FDA has classed as "generally recognized as safe and effective."

What the research says

A 2025 screening study in Environ Sci Technol mapped UV filter chemicals across personal care products, with oxybenzone and other penetrators showing up widely. Chemical filters are known endocrine disruptors in animal studies.

For babies under six months, avoid sun exposure rather than using any sunscreen (pediatrician guidance). For older babies and kids, non-nano zinc oxide mineral sunscreen is the cleanest option.
