Is a nylon tea infuser safer than a plastic tea bag?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studykitchen
Verdict: Avoid

No. Nylon and plastic pyramid bags both release microplastics. Stainless steel infusers are cleaner.

What's actually in it

Nylon tea infusers and "silk" pyramid tea bags are all plastic: nylon, PET, or PLA. All of them release billions of microplastic and nanoplastic particles into boiling water during a 5-minute steep.

What the research says

A 2025 study in J Agric Food Chem documented massive particle release from plastics in hot water. Earlier research on tea bags showed billions of particles per cup.

Use loose leaf tea with a stainless steel infuser or teapot. Or paper tea bags labeled "plastic-free" and "no heat-seal."
