Is olive oil in a dark glass bottle safer than clear glass?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studykitchen
Verdict: Safer

Yes. Dark glass blocks light, which slows oxidation and keeps the oil from breaking down into harmful compounds.

What's actually in it

Olive oil is sensitive to light, heat, and oxygen. UV light breaks oil into free radicals and rancidity compounds. Dark or opaque bottles block most light. Plastic adds a separate problem (plasticizer migration into fat). So dark glass is the best default.

The best combination: dark glass bottle, cool cabinet, tight cap.

What the research says

A 2025 study in J Hazard Mater mapped phthalate intake across diets and flagged fatty foods in plastic as a major source. Oil in dark glass avoids both the light damage and the plastic problem.

Buy olive oil in dark glass or tin. Use within six to twelve months of opening. Store in a cabinet, not next to the stove.
