Is rice from any region mostly fine, or are some places way worse for pesticide residue?
Region matters a lot. Pesticide residue in rice swings widely between countries and brands.
What's actually in it
Rice picks up pesticides from the water it's flooded with and sometimes from preharvest sprays. Common hits are chlorpyrifos, profenofos, and various fungicides. Brown rice carries more residue because the bran holds the chemicals.
The amount in your bag depends on the country and farming style much more than on the grain shape.
What the research says
A 2026 study in Environ Int compared rice samples from many countries and ranked them by pesticide load. Some regions had small detection rates; others had multiple residues in almost every sample. The team built a priority list of the worst pesticide-rice combos to watch for.
The dietary risk score was highest for kids in regions where rice is a daily staple and farming uses heavy spray programs.
For lower exposure, pick certified organic rice when budget allows. Look for U.S.-grown white basmati or California rice for kid meals. Rinse rice well in cool water and cook with extra water that you drain off. Rotate in quinoa, oats, and barley through the week.
