Is solid wood baby furniture worth the extra cost?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Safer

Yes. Solid wood skips formaldehyde glue and outlasts the kids.

What's actually in it

Solid wood furniture uses wood joints or screws, not formaldehyde glue. It doesn't off-gas, it doesn't crumble, and a quality crib or dresser lasts for multiple kids and can be resold.

What the research says

A 2025 review in Rev Environ Health documented formaldehyde risks from glued pressed-wood furniture. Solid wood skips the issue.

Look for hardwood (maple, oak, walnut) or solid pine. Water-based finishes or natural oil finishes (like Osmo) are cleaner than polyurethane.
