Is sunflower oil stored in plastic bottles safe for cooking?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studieskitchen
Verdict: Use Caution

Not great. Oil is fat, and fat pulls plasticizers out of plastic faster than almost anything else.

What's actually in it

Most supermarket cooking oils come in PET or HDPE plastic. Oil is fat, and fat is the best solvent for phthalates and other lipophilic plasticizers. Oils sit on shelves for months to a year before use. All that time is contact time.

Olive oil, sunflower oil, and other cooking oils in plastic tend to pick up measurable plasticizer loads.

What the research says

A 2025 study in J Hazard Mater mapped phthalate intake across realistic diets and found fatty foods in plastic were major contributors. A 2025 study linked prenatal phthalates to slower infant neurodevelopment.

Buy cooking oils in glass bottles or dark tins. If you buy bulk in plastic, transfer to a dark glass bottle at home and keep in a cool place.
