Atherosclerosis, the process of arterial plaque buildup that leads to heart attacks and strokes, requires three things: endothelial damage, inflammation, and lipid accumulation. Microplastics contribute to all three.
What the research says
A 2026 review in Annu Rev Pharmacol Toxicol compiled the mechanistic evidence for how microplastics drive atherosclerosis. Microplastics damage the endothelial cells lining blood vessel walls, triggering inflammatory responses. They activate macrophages to foam cell conversion (a key step in plaque formation). They disrupt lipid metabolism in vascular tissue.
Multiple microplastic types have been detected in atherosclerotic plaques from actual human patients. Polyethylene, polypropylene, and PVC fragments have all been found. People with higher microplastic plaque burden had worse cardiovascular outcomes.
This connects everyday plastic product exposure directly to cardiovascular disease risk through a physical mechanism: plastic particles in arteries are doing physical and chemical damage to the vessel walls. Reducing microplastic intake means switching from plastic food packaging and containers to glass and stainless alternatives for hot food and beverages.
