How do microplastics enter the food chain and end up in everyday food?

What's actually in it

Plastic contamination of food happens at almost every step from farm to table. Agricultural plastic (mulch films, irrigation pipes, polytunnels) fragments and contaminates soil. Crops irrigated with plastic-contaminated water absorb microplastics. Food processing equipment made of plastic sheds particles into food as it moves through conveyors, mixers, and packaging lines.

Then there's the packaging itself: direct contact with plastic packaging transfers particles and chemicals into food over time, especially for fatty, acidic, or heated foods.

What the research says

A 2026 review uncovering the hidden risks of microplastics in the food chain mapped the full pathway from plastic production to food contamination and quantified exposure across food categories. The review found microplastics in fruits, vegetables, grains, meat, seafood, dairy, and packaged processed food. No major food category was found to be free of microplastic contamination.

The highest contamination was in seafood and highly processed foods. The lowest was in fresh produce from clean-water farms stored and sold without plastic packaging. The difference between high- and low-exposure diets is significant: people eating heavily packaged processed diets had estimated microplastic intakes 10 to 20 times higher than those eating fresh whole foods.

Choosing fresh whole foods, filtering drinking water, using glass or stainless steel containers, and minimizing plastic-packaged and processed food intake are the most effective practical strategies.
