PFAS cross the placenta throughout pregnancy. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of birth weight and prenatal PFAS exposure pooled data from dozens of studies across multiple countries and found a consistent, statistically significant inverse relationship: higher maternal PFAS levels were associated with lower birth weight. The meta-analysis also found that certain PFAS compounds (PFOA, PFOS, and several others) showed the strongest associations.
This is the kind of high-quality evidence that drives clinical recommendations. A single study can be questioned; a meta-analysis of many studies from different populations with consistent results provides much stronger evidence for a causal relationship.
The most effective way to reduce prenatal PFAS exposure is to change household sources before pregnancy: switch from nonstick to cast iron or stainless steel cookware, filter drinking water, and avoid PFAS-treated food packaging.
