Do phthalates in plastic products damage thyroid function?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studyhome
Verdict: Avoid

Yes. Phthalates interfere with thyroid hormone production, transport, and signaling. Research shows people with higher phthalate exposure have disrupted thyroid hormone levels.

What's actually in it

Phthalates are plasticizers in hundreds of household products: soft plastic food wraps, vinyl flooring, shower curtains, and fragrance-containing personal care products. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is among the most common and most studied.

The thyroid gland regulates metabolism, body temperature, and energy. Thyroid hormones also play a critical role in fetal brain development. Disrupting thyroid signaling during pregnancy or childhood has lasting effects.

What the research says

A 2026 study on dibutyl phthalate and thyroid toxicity found that DBP induces thyroid cell death through pyroptosis, an inflammatory form of cell death. The study identified the specific cellular pathway DBP uses to damage thyroid follicular cells.

Population studies consistently find that people with higher urinary phthalate levels have lower thyroid hormone concentrations. Even at the low exposures typical from household products, the association holds. Pregnant women are most vulnerable because even modest thyroid disruption can affect fetal brain development.

Reducing phthalate exposure means choosing hard plastics, glass, or stainless steel over soft PVC, using fragrance-free products, and avoiding vinyl materials where possible.
