Baby shampoo, lotion, diaper cream, baby wash, and wipes are applied directly to a baby's skin, often multiple times a day. A baby's skin is thinner and more permeable than adult skin, which means chemicals absorb faster and more completely. Products marketed as "gentle" or "for sensitive skin" can still contain preservatives, fragrances, UV filters, and plasticizers.

Newborns and infants get the highest dose per pound of body weight because they're small but get full-body product application.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Environ Int used advanced non-target screening to look for chemicals of emerging concern in personal hygiene products designed for babies and vulnerable populations. Standard label checks would miss most of what they found.

The screening detected endocrine-disrupting chemicals, antimicrobials, and UV filters in multiple product types. Some chemicals weren't listed on the label at all, either because they were present as contaminants or because disclosure rules don't require listing chemicals below a certain threshold.

The researchers calculated exposure estimates for newborns based on typical daily use patterns. Because babies get multiple product applications per day across their entire body, cumulative exposure was higher than what any single product application would suggest.

Choosing products with short, simple ingredient lists helps. Look for brands that do third-party testing for endocrine disruptors, and consider that fewer products used less often means less overall chemical exposure for your baby.
