Are amber teething necklaces safe for babies?
No. They're a choking and strangulation hazard, and there's no evidence they help with teething.
What's actually in it
Amber teething necklaces are marketed to release succinic acid against skin to ease teething pain. The FDA and AAP have warned parents not to use them. Beads pose choking and strangulation risks, and studies have found no evidence of medical benefit.
What the research says
A 2025 study on kids' product safety backs up the principle that any product with strangulation or choking risks has a very high bar to clear for proven benefit. Amber teething necklaces don't clear it.
For teething pain, use a cold silicone teether, a chilled (not frozen) wet washcloth, or a finger massage on gums. Talk to your pediatrician if teething seems severe.
