Are melamine dishes safe to heat in the microwave?
No. Heat pulls melamine and formaldehyde out of these dishes into whatever's inside.
What's actually in it
Melamine dishware (including most bamboo kids' plates) is made from melamine-formaldehyde resin. The resin is stable at room temperature but breaks down with heat. Microwaving is the worst case because it heats the plate and the food together.
Melamine at high doses damages kidneys; formaldehyde is a known carcinogen.
What the research says
A 2025 study in Food Chem X mapped the chemicals coming off bamboo-melamine dishes during typical food contact. The hot, acidic, and fatty food simulants pulled the most melamine and formaldehyde, with some samples crossing European migration limits.
Never microwave melamine. Never use melamine for hot soup, oatmeal, or pasta served directly from the pot. Save melamine dishes for cold, dry snacks, picnics, or poolside only. For daily use, plain ceramic, glass, or stainless steel don't have this problem.
