Are PFAS alternatives clearly safer during pregnancy?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Use Caution

Use caution. A 2026 network toxicology study found that PFAS alternatives such as HFPO-DA and OBS showed comparable or novel risk pathways for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Choose uncoated materials when that choice is easy.

What's actually in it

Older PFAS, such as PFOA and PFOS, were used in nonstick, stain-resistant, grease-resistant, and water-resistant products. Newer alternatives include HFPO-DA and OBS.

Newer does not automatically mean safer. Some replacement PFAS are less studied, and families are left sorting through vague product claims.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Chem Biol Interact used network toxicology and molecular docking to compare legacy PFAS with alternatives for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

The study found that PFAS alternatives had multi-organ toxicity predictions comparable to legacy PFAS. It also found shared pregnancy-related targets, including STAT3 and CASP3, plus unique targets such as MTOR and AKT1. The authors concluded that PFAS alternatives did not show a superior safety profile in this model.

What to do at home

This is not direct testing of every baby product. It is a reason to avoid stain-resistant, waterproof, and grease-resistant coatings when you can. For baby textiles, plain organic cotton is a better default than coated fabric.
