Are synthetic daycare nap mats a plasticizer exposure concern?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studiesbaby
Verdict: Use Caution

Yes. Synthetic mats and classroom bedding can add plasticizer and VOC exposure around children.

What is actually in it

Many daycare nap mats use synthetic covers and foam. The concern is repeated close contact with materials that can release plasticizers or volatile chemicals.

This does not prove a nap mat causes allergies. It does mean kids who nap on synthetic surfaces every weekday have a practical exposure point worth improving.

What the research says

A 2026 Environment International study measured plasticizers in 30 kindergarten classrooms. It identified flooring and beds as primary contributors, with source contributions of 27% to 59%.

A 2025 Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety study screened 34 children’s play mats and found 71 volatile substances. The authors ranked volatile chemical safety as EPE better than XPE, PVC, and EVA.

What to do instead

Use an organic cotton cover or sheet over daycare mats and wash it often. Ask whether your child can bring a cotton-covered mat from home. Avoid soft vinyl nap mats when a cotton or washable lower-plastic option is available.
