Can bamboo food-contact materials contain hidden additives?
Yes. A 2025 study found a wide mix of chemicals in bamboo-based food-contact items, including some substances of concern.
What is actually in it
Bamboo food-contact items can be more complicated than they look. Some plates, cups, chopsticks, and utensils are made with bamboo fibers plus binders, coatings, colorants, or other additives.
That matters because food-contact materials should be judged by what can touch food, not by the front-label material alone.
What the research says
A 2025 study in Food Chem X screened many bamboo-based food-contact articles, including plates and chopsticks, with GC-MS and LC-MS methods.
The researchers tentatively identified a wide range of volatile and semi-volatile compounds. Some were considered toxic, including 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. In one sample suspected of containing melamine, the study detected melamine and related compounds.
This does not mean every bamboo item is the same. For cooking and serving, solid olive wood utensils are a simpler food-contact swap.
