Can BPS in BPA-free plastic affect brain and hormone signals?
In zebrafish research, BPS is linked with hormone, behavior, brain, and metabolism changes.
What is actually in it
Bisphenol S (BPS) is used as a replacement for BPA. A product can say BPA-free and still use another bisphenol.
BPS can show up in plastic and other consumer materials. Heat and wear are good reasons to avoid using plastic for warm food or drinks.
What the research says
A 2026 review in Environ Toxicol Pharmacol looked at BPS studies in zebrafish. The review linked BPS exposure with changes in hormone systems, behavior, brain signaling, metabolism, heart function, and immune markers.
Zebrafish are not people, so this is not proof of the same effect in children. It is still a clear reason to treat BPA-free plastic with caution. For food storage, glass or stainless steel is the cleaner swap.
