Can parabens and bisphenols in personal care products trigger early breast development in girls?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Avoid

Yes. Girls with higher urinary levels of parabens and BPA from cosmetics and plastic products were more likely to develop premature breast growth.

What's actually in it

Girls are exposed to parabens through shampoos, lotions, and body washes, and to bisphenol A through plastic food containers, water bottles, and canned food linings. Both chemicals mimic estrogen, the hormone that triggers breast development during puberty. When young girls absorb these chemicals daily, their bodies may respond as if they're receiving estrogen signals.

Premature thelarche (early breast development before age 8) is becoming more common, and environmental estrogen exposure is a suspected contributor.

What the research says

A 2026 study in J Clin Res Pediatr Endocrinol measured urinary metabolites of parabens and BPA in girls with premature thelarche and compared them to girls developing normally. Girls with early breast development had higher levels of parabens and BPA in their urine.

The estrogenic activity of these chemicals was strong enough to stimulate breast tissue growth years before natural puberty should begin. The study identified methylparaben and BPA as the strongest contributors to the effect.

Choosing paraben-free personal care products for young girls and reducing BPA exposure by using glass or stainless steel for food and drinks can help prevent premature estrogen stimulation during childhood.
