Do plastic toys release volatile chemicals that need closer screening?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Some Concern

Yes. A 2026 study found 216 volatile substances in 56 plastic toys and flagged 16 higher-priority substances for risk control.

What is actually in it

Plastic toys can release volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. These are chemicals that move from the toy into the air.

Some VOCs come from raw materials, plastic additives, colorants, solvents, or breakdown during manufacturing and storage.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Talanta used GC-Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry to screen volatile substances in 56 plastic toys.

The researchers identified 216 volatile substances. They also found 22 substances that differed significantly across toy materials, and identified characteristic compounds for ABS, PVC, and TPR toys.

A risk-prioritization screen flagged 16 higher-priority substances. Diisobutyl phthalate exceeded the 0.1% threshold in 5 PVC toys and 1 TPR toy. The study also flagged naphthalene, isopropylbenzene, 4-vinylcyclohexene, alpha-methylstyrene, and methyl methacrylate as concerns.

This does not mean every plastic toy is dangerous. It does show why simple-material toys are easier to trust. Solid wood toys avoid plastic VOC off-gassing from the toy body.
