Is glass milk cleaner than plastic-jug milk?
Based on 2 peer-reviewed studieskitchen
Verdict: Safer
Yes. Glass doesn't leach. Plastic jugs leach plasticizers and microplastics.
What's actually in it
Plastic milk jugs are HDPE (recycling 2). Refrigerated milk is less aggressive than hot milk, but long storage in plastic still transfers microplastics and trace plasticizers into milk fat.
What the research says
A 2025 study in Food Chem X found BPA and plasticizers in packaged milk. A 2025 study documented microplastics across milk packaging.
Where available, glass milk bottles (often with a deposit) are the cleanest. Otherwise, transfer milk to a glass pitcher at home and discard the plastic jug sooner.
