Is it safe to buy flour in a plastic-lined paper bag?
Based on 1 peer-reviewed studykitchen
Verdict: Use Caution
Low risk. Dry flour in paper with a thin plastic liner has minimal chemical migration.
What's actually in it
Most flour bags are paper with a thin polyethylene inner layer. Dry flour doesn't pull much from plastic. Long storage near heat (like above the stove) can slightly increase migration.
What the research says
A 2025 study found dry foods in plastic contributed little to dietary phthalate intake compared to wet or fatty foods.
Transfer flour to a glass jar or metal tin at home for freshness (not primarily for chemistry). Keep in a cool, dry cabinet.
