Is it safe to drink sparkling water from a plastic bottle?
Not ideal. Carbonation pressurizes the bottle and pulls more microplastics into the water.
What's actually in it
Sparkling water in plastic is slightly acidic (carbonic acid) and pressurized. Both speed migration from the bottle walls. The bottle has to withstand pressure, so it's often made with thicker PET that may release more additives like antimony.
Carbonated drinks stored warm are the worst case.
What the research says
A 2025 study in Environ Monit Assess counted microplastics across drinking water products and found higher counts in carbonated products. A 2025 trial showed canned and PET drinks raised urinary BPA and blood pressure.
Buy sparkling water in glass bottles. Or carbonate filtered tap water at home with a SodaStream-style unit using a glass or BPA-free bottle.
