Yogurt served in a small glass jar for a child

Is it safe to give kids yogurt from plastic cups every day?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studykitchen
Verdict: Use less plastic

Yogurt can be a good food. The plastic cup habit is the part to reduce when you can.

What is in it

Yogurt is not the problem. The concern is daily food contact with plastic cups, plastic lids, and plastic spoons.

The source for this page does not prove that yogurt cups cause gut changes. It does show that preschoolers are exposed to microplastics and that higher plastic levels connect with gut bacteria changes.

What the research says

A 2026 EBioMedicine study measured microplastics in stool samples from preschool children. The study found several plastic types and reported links with gut microbiota composition, microbial function pathways, and antibiotic resistance genes.

That is enough reason to reduce daily plastic food contact when the swap is easy.

What to do

Buy a larger yogurt container when it makes sense, then portion it into glass jars at home. For lunchboxes, use stainless steel or glass containers with tight lids.

Do not stress over an occasional single-serve cup. Focus on the daily routine.
